METHODS OF THEORETICAL PHYSICS
PHYS 5714, FALL 2019




Welcome to the web page for the course "Methods of Theoretical Physics". This course deals with advanced mathematics and its application to problem-solving.


News:

Classes start on Monday August 26, 2019.

We will have an optional extra class on Thursday September 26, from 9:30 am - 10:45 am, in McBryde 209. Lecture notes here.

We will have an optional extra class on Friday September 13, from 3:45 pm - 5 pm, in Robeson 112. Lecture notes here.

We will have an optional extra class devoted to triple integration in cylindrical and spherical coordinates on Monday Oct 7 from 11:15 - 12:05 in Derring 1076. Lecture notes here.

No class on Wed Oct 23.

There will be an optional make-up class on Tuesday Oct 29, from 2-3:15 pm in Rob 116. Lecture notes here.

Office hours will be Mon, Wed 1-2:30 pm.

The place-out exam will be Saturday August 24 (the Saturday before classes start), from 2 pm - 5 pm, in Robeson 304. Everyone is welcome to attempt the place-out test; there are no consequences if you do not pass the test (aside from being required to take the class). In principle, it will cover (a) vector calculus identities such as Green's theorem, Stoke's theorem, and the divergence theorem, (b) linear algebra, and (c) complex analysis and contour integration.

Bring a pen or pencil to write with, but that's all you should need.

That all said, email me if you want to take the placement test. That way, should anything come up and the test need to be rescheduled, I'll be able to alert you.

For complex analysis, we will use George Cain's text Complex analysis, available here. (Please do not try to print out the entire text -- if many people in the class do so, it'll use up the department's printer paper and toner.)

The final exam will be Tuesday December 17, from 7:45 - 9:45 am, in our usual classroom.
