E72: Lenz's Law Pendulum |
Purpose: To illustrate eddy currents and Lenz's Law. |
Description: |
Large magnet setup with a pendulum to swing various metal disks between the pole faces of the magnet. Attaching different metal disks to the pendulum, note the various degrees of damping due to the induced currents in the material. Insulators and poor conductors will, of course, be less damped than good conductors. Serrated conductors will not perform as well as solid conductors. |
