W70: The Doppler Effect |
Purpose: To illustrate qualitatively the Doppler effect in sound. |
Description: | ||
- There are 2 options to use to demonstrate the doppler effect. Please specify which one you want or if you want both when you sign up. |
Option 1: A small speaker connected to an oscillator by a flexible cable. Turn on the oscillator and set it to a frequency of about 600 Hz. Twirl the speaker about an axis parallel to the front of the classroom. The class will hear a rise in pitch as the speaker approaches and a drop in pitch as it recedes. |
Option 2: The doppler ball! Push the button at the X to make it start buzzing. Throw it at the students and observe the changes in pitch. |
