Equipment List:
- Helmholtz Coils and Bulb Set up
- Coil Base
- 2 x Coils attached to the base
- Mirror Scale
- e/m Tube
- 250 V T2A Fuse
- 6 x Red Banana Cords wired as follows:
- Make sure both power supplies are unplugged before starting!
- ( + ) terminal of DC high current power supply → 10A terminal of the left side DMM
- Left DMM Comm Terminal → red terminal of the front helmholtz coil
- Left terminal of AC high current power supply → left terminal of Filment input on the coil base
- Right terminal of AC high current power supply → right terminal of Filment input on the coil base
- Right most terminal of the high voltage power supply → the V/Ω terminal of the right side DMM
- Into the red wire that is already plugged into the right most terminal of the high voltage power supply → the left (red) terminal of the acccerlation voltage on the coil base
- 4 x Black Banana Cords wired as follows:
- Make sure both power supplies are unplugged before starting!
- ( - ) terminal of DC high current power supply → red terminal of the rear helmholtz coil
- Black terminal of the front helmholtz coil → red terminal of the rear helmholtz coil
- Center terminal of the high voltage power supply → the Comm terminal of the right side DMM
- Into the black wire that is already plugged into the center terminal of the high voltage power supply → the right (black) terminal of the acccerlation voltage on the coil base
- 2 x Multimeters (DMM)
- 2 x High Voltage Power Supply
- 2 x High Current Power Supply
- 2 x Power Cords
- Light Hood
- Bar Manget
Notes and tests:
- Only Touch The Bulb With Gloves On
- Power Settings:
- Set all power knobs on both supplies to 0 by turning them counter clockwise until the stop.
- Turn on both power supplies by flipping the power switches.
- On the DC portion of the High Current Power Supply:
- Turn the Voltage Knob to max by turning it clockwise until it stops.
- Turn the Current Knob (A) to until the current reading is 3.1A ± 0.1A.
- Check that the current reading on the power supply and the DMM agree to ± 0.02A.
- Turn the Voltage Knob to 0 by turning it counter clockwise until it stops.
- Set the AC Voltage on the High Current Power Supply (H) to 6.3V. Turn the knob slowly or you will blow the fuse.
- On the DC portion of the High Voltage Power Supply:
- Turn the left most (50V) knob to 0 by turning it counter clockwise until it stops.
- Slowly turn the 500 V knob up by turning it clockwise until you see a beam appear in the bulb.
- Do Not Exceed 200 V.
- If a beam does not appear by 200 V, reduce the voltage to 0 V and return to try again in 10 minutes.
- Check that the voltage reading on the power supply and the DMM agree to ± 0.2V.
- Turn the 500 V Knob to 0 by turning it coutner clockwise until it stops.
- Double check that the High Current DC Voltage is set to 0 V and the High Voltage DC Voltage is set to 0 V.
- Turn off both power supplies.
- If the Filament on the bulb does not start glowing in 3 seconds, it is likely the fuse.
- If the beam is faint or diffuse, the bulb may need to be replaced:
- Be cautious when handling the bulb, they will pop into shards of glass if broken and are the most expensive part of the set up.
- To remove the bulb, simply grab it by the bottom of the sphere and pull up while wiggling it a little bit.
- Wear cloth gloves when handling the new bulb.
- To Install a new bulb, ensure that the metal pins and plastic notch align properly. Once installed, the bulb should be able to rotate in Yaw by about ± 90°
