Ultra-Cold Neutron Guide Project at VT

Virginia Tech has various responsibilities in the experiment.  Our main one is overseeing the design of the guide system from the source through the experiment.  As part of this we are developing DLC coatings for the inside of quartz tubing.  The picture shows the parts of the system which need this coating in red.  A large amount of R&D has gone into this part of the project since this is a new area of UCN transport.  It is apparent that even very small amounts of impurities on the quartz can cause depolarization of the UCN which washes out the effect we are looking for in the experiment.
