Lab 8: Magnetic Fields

Rachel using the galvenometer to measure induced current with the old set up using the hedgehog power supply and hand made trapeze wire on the table as well.

Rachel using the galvenometer to measure induced current.

Equipment List:

  1. Analog Galvanometer
  2. Large Solenoid
  3. 2 x Bar Magnet, Cylindrical
    • Stored in the Bar Magnet Box
    • Connected with 2 x Bar Magnet Keeper
  4. 3 x Small Compasses
  5. Bg of Magnetic Test Materials:
    • Aluminum Cylinder
    • Wooden Cylinder
    • Brass Cylinder
    • Iron Cylinder
    • Plastic Cylinder - Black
    • Paper Clip - Steel
  6. Variable Gap Magnet with Poles labelled
  7. Current Limited Power Supply plugged in with its Power Cord
  8. Black alligator clips
  9. Red alligator clips
  10. 2 Red Alligator to Alligator.
  11. 2 Black Alligator to Alligator.
  12. 2 Spade to Spade Cord.
  13. Mini A-Base
  14. 45cm Rod
  15. Magnetic Force Accessory Consisting of:
    • PASCO Trapeze wire.
    • Magnetic Force Mounting Rod.

General Class use :

  1. Crookes Tube
  2. Crookes Tube Power Supply.
  3. 4 x Lenz's Law Tube.
  4. 4 x Lenz's Law Dummy Magnet.
  5. 4 x Lenz's Law Magnet.

Notes and tests:

  1. Setup and test the trapeze wire circuit. Then, disconnect it.
  2. Test power supplies and galvanometers.
  3. Test and remagnetize the bar magnets and compasses.
  4. Setup the Crookes tube on the TA counter and test.

Transition Notes: (Summer Only)

  1. Leave out 2 of the alligator cables, but put everything else away.
  2. Save 11x17 which isn't too damaged for future use, but recycle any that are torn or drawn on.
  3. Coil up the capacitance leads before putting them away.
Whole Table Setup of the Magnetic Fields Lab. Galvanometer and Solenoid on the left, Trapeze Setup on the right connected to the power supply. Other Accessories are spread from left to right.

This is what your table should look like once set up

Additional Images below:

One end of the lenzs law tube, one dummy magnet and one real magnet (both look the same) on a white background.

The General class setup.

There should 4 of these on the back counter of each room.

The trapeze wire setup plugged in and turned on. The wires connect as follows: Starting from the red terminal of the power supply there is a red wire going to the spring switch. From there, another red wire goes into the left side of the trapeze. The trapeze is hanging in the variable gap magnet's gap with the magnet standing on one of its poles. A black wire is connected from the right end of the trapeze to the black terminal of the power supply. The supply is on and set to 2.1 volts

This is the correct set up for the trapeze

The Galvanometer hooked up to the solinoid with two spade wires. A Hand is lowering two barmagnets stuck end on end into the solenoid and the needle on the Galvanometer is deflected to the right to about 150 microamps

This is the test for the coil and Galvanometer.
