Physics 2216 Laboratory Equipment List

Lab 19: Polarization

Annelise Smiling excitedly over the old setup of polarization

Annelise is excited for polarization!

Equipment List:

  1. LabPro Interface with:
    • Light Sensor
    • Light Sensor To hold the light sensor.
    • Light Sensor Sheath
  2. Optics Track
  3. 3 x Polarizer
  4. 3 x Polarizer Holder
  5. Lens A (100mm)
  6. Light Source
  7. Light Source AC Adapterr

Notes and tests:

  1. Test that all light sources work.
  2. Clean lenses and polarizers with lens wipes
  3. Open "Polarization.cmbl" in the Lab 20 folder in class notes and test the light sensors.
  4. Check the alignment of the optical bench so that you read a decent amount of "lux" (on the order of 10,000) when the beam is focused right onto the light sensor.
  5. No need to be too over precise with the alignment since everything will get moved around quite a bit anyway. Just make sure the light can shine through all parts and register in the light sensor.
Full table set up with the light source on the left followed the lens about 10 cm away, 3 polarizers in holders very close to the lens and one another, and finally the light sensor in the holder with the tip about 5cm away from the last polarizer.

This is what your table should look like once set up. This image has the old light source. There are two colors of light sensor.

Additional Images below:

There is no General class setup. Instead, here's a picture of

Cameron setting up the old laser set up.

A close look at the light sensor mounted in in the lens bracket.

The screws on the bracket can be loosened to change the

centering of the sensor to match the focused light.
