Physics 2305 Laboratory Equipment List

Lab 7: Collisions and Momentum Conservation

Transition notes:

  1. Leave out the track, dynamics (plunger) cart, mass set (used two labs later but not in the way), angle indicator, and force sensor.
  2. Put away the large table clamp, RMS, pulley, 2.5m string, spring scale, springs, and 90cm rod
  3. Take off and put away friction pads.
  4. Remove the force sensor from the bumper bracket and screw it onto the collision cart. You may need to remove the screw from the cart to do so.
  5. Sweepy sweepy the tables
  6. The only additions from what is left from the previous lab are: Collision Cart, cart masses, clay, and ruler.
  7. The bumper accessory will need to be moved and attached to the right and back side of the track.

Equipment List:

  1. 850 Interface with:
    • Motion Detector (yellow DG1, black DG2)
    • Force Probe (Analog A):
      • With a Force Probe Hook on the front
      • And 2 x BrassPosts on top
      • Mounted on the Dynamics Cart (Plunger Cart)
    • Force Probe (Analog B):
      • With a Rubber Bumper
      • Mounted on the Collision Cart
  2. Cart Track
    • Elevation Clamp
    • on the left side clamped to the 45cm Rod sitting in a [Medium Clamp not yet in JSON File]
    • Angle Indicator attached with a Short Track Thumb Screw
  3. Hanging Mass Set with the following masses:
    • 1 x 10g Mass
    • 2 x 20g Mass
    • 2 x 50g Mass
    • 1 x 100g Mass
    • 2 x 200g Mass
    • 1 x 500g Mass
  4. Bumper Accessory Bracket with the following accessories:
    • Attached to the track with 2 30 cm ruler
    • Heavy Spring with
      • Rubber Stopper #1 in it
    • Clay Holder
    • 2 x Rubber Bumper
  5. 30 cm ruler
  6. 2 balls of Clay in a ziptop bag
  7. 2 Clay in a ziptop bag
  8. 2 Clay in a ziptop bag
  9. Scale

Notes and tests:

  1. The Bumper Accessory needs to be placed on the right side of the track (that is opposite the elevation clamp).
  2. The motion detector needs to be on the left side of the track since it is not effective behind the bumper accessory.
  3. Make sure that each of the bumper accessory kits is complete. Put the heavy spring with stopper in the front position.
  4. Put one of the small bumpers on the collision cart force sensor, and the clay holder cup on the dynamics cart force sensor.
  5. Screw the hooks from the force sensors onto the bumper accessory.
  6. Start “2305 Lab 7 test.cap” from the test files folder. Move a cart in front of the Motion Sensor and push/pull on both of the force probes. They should register on the graph.
  7. No friction pads are used in this lab.
