Physics 2305 Laboratory Equipment List

Lab 9: Thermal Physics

Billy

Transition notes:

  1. Only the 90 cm rod is used from the 2D collision lab. .
  2. If the mass set was left out, it is used in this lab

Equipment List:

  1. 850 Interface
    • Rotary Motion Sensor with yellow plug DG1, black plug DG2
    • 2 x Temperature Sensor In CH B and CH C (Ask Will to double check the file for this!)
  2. Gas Law Apparatus
    • The string attached to the platform should go around the large pulley of the rotary motion sensor.
  3. Aluminum Can with
    • Gas Can Stopper
    • Tygon Tubing
  4. Rod - 90cm
  5. A - Base
  6. Hanging Mass Set
  7. with the following masses:
    • 1 x Hanging mass - 5g Pasco
    • 1 x Hanging mass - 10g Pasco
    • 2 x Hanging mass - 20g Pasco
    • 2 x Hanging mass - 50g Pasco
    • 1 x Hanging mass - 100g Pasco
    • 2 x Hanging mass - 200g Pasco
    • 1 x Hanging mass - 500g Pasco
  8. Mass hanger - 5g (The 50g mass hangers will work as long as the RMS is positioned high enough).
  9. Steam Generator
  10. Power Cord for the steam generator
  11. 2 x Styrofoam Cup - Large
  12. Plastic cup
  13. Ice Melt Block - Plastic
  14. Ice Melt Block - Metal
  15. 2 x O-Ring - Black
  16. Handheld IR Thermometer

General Class use :

  1. 5 gallon container of de-ionized water (one per quadrant) (A3.2)
  2. Cooler with ice (one per quadrant) (A3.1)
  3. 2 x Fire Piston Apparatus per quad on tables in the middle of the room. Put and equal number on the spares cart.
  4. For each Fire Piston put out:
    • GunCotton
    • FirePistonPokeyStick
    • Tube Lube
    • Ruler Metric - 30cm

Notes and tests:

  1. The string should go around the large pulley of the RMS such that the position graph will read positve when you pull the hanger down.
  2. Open the test file “2305 Lab 11 test.cap” and make sure all sensors are reading correctly. See manager for details.
  3. Both tubing clamps on Heat Engine should be open.
  4. Set up the RMS at the very top of the 90cm rod so the mass hanger can move freely.

This is what your table should look like once set up

The General class setup.

There should be A DI container with a bucket below for catching Drips,

a cooler (Should be one of the yellow ones) with ice, and the Fire piston setup

Fire Pistons Don't let Will forget them!!!!
