E39: Magnetic Compasses |

Purpose: To show various properties of the earth's magnetic field, the meaning of the direction of a magnetic field, and to illistrate the magnetic field around current carrying wires. |

Transparent compass with angle measurements Compass on stand Magnetic Dip compass Use the Cannon Document camera or Close-up Camera to improve the viewing for the class.

You may also use the little boat with a compass needle in it. Place the boat in a bath of water, and once any waves are minimized and you let go of the boat (not pushing it) it will align with north. You can also bring a bar magnet to the side of the bath and cause the boat to steer to a side. |
