E39: Magnetic Compasses

Purpose: To show various properties of the earth's magnetic field, the meaning of the direction of a magnetic field, and to illistrate the magnetic                      field around current carrying wires.

Description:

Transparent compass with angle measurements

Compass on stand

Magnetic Dip compass

Use the Cannon Document camera or Close-up Camera to improve the viewing for the class.

You may also use the little boat with a compass needle in it. Place the boat in a bath of water, and once any waves are minimized and you let go of the boat (not pushing it) it will align with north. You can also bring a bar magnet to the side of the bath and cause the boat to steer to a side.
